Born in 1985 in Kazakhstan, Guzel Zakir works across China and Central Asia.

 

She graduated from the Academy of Arts at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University and later studied Chinese painting at the Xinjiang Academy of Arts. Zakirova is a member of the “Young Artists’ Union” in Moscow and has held solo exhibitions at the Dunya Gallery in Kazakhstan and the Central Museum in Almaty. Her first solo exhibition in China, Let Her Dance, opened in June 2022 at Gaotai Gallery.

 

Zakirova’s practice explores the relationship between the self and the world. Her work expresses a deep emotional connection to the region of Xinjiang and functions as a hand-rendered visual archive of the women who live there. Having lived and studied in Xinjiang, she documented and engaged with the everyday lives of local women, who in turn infused her artistic process with vitality and led her to reexamine her cultural memory and personal identity.

 

Her works are marked by a strong cultural sensibility, bringing together regional aesthetics and historical references through a distinct visual language. She has conducted in-depth research into historical materials and archival sketches—especially those depicting women of Central Asia—and integrates this with her study of traditional dress and material culture. Her works resonate with symbolic depth, transforming personal narratives into artworks with a compelling humanistic core.
